Easy Meatloaf Recipe
Description
The meatloaf is made by mixing Italian-style breadcrumbs soaked in milk with chili sauce, finely chopped onion, an egg, garlic salt, black pepper, and ground beef. This mixture is shaped into a loaf and baked at 350°F for 55 to 60 minutes, until cooked through. Additional chili sauce can be brushed on top toward the end of baking for added moisture and flavor.
This approach results in a moist meatloaf with a balanced seasoning profile and a slightly tangy taste from the chili sauce. The use of Italian-style breadcrumbs and milk helps keep the texture tender without being dense.
Letting the meatloaf rest for 10 minutes before slicing ensures the juices redistribute and the slices hold together well. Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days and can be frozen for up to 3 months, preferably sliced for easier thawing and reheating.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs Italian style
- 1/2 cup milk skim
- 1/2 cup chili sauce plus extra for brushing on after baking
- 1/2 cup white onion finely chopped, or yellow onion
- 1 egg large
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 F.
- In a large mixing bowl, stir together bread crumbs, milk, chili sauce, onion, egg, salts, and pepper until well-combined.
- Add ground beef, and mix until just combined.
- Shape into a loaf in a 9x5-inch baking pan.
- Bake 55-60 minutes, or until done.
- Brush on additional chili sauce, if desired.
Notes
- Leftover meatloaf can be frozen for up to 3 months; slice before freezing for easier thawing.
- To reheat, thaw completely and warm in the oven at 305°F until heated through.
- You can use ketchup or barbecue sauce instead of chili sauce if preferred.
- Allow meatloaf to rest 10 minutes after baking before slicing to retain moisture.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
