Easy Onion Gravy

Report
Easy Onion Gravy is made by slowly cooking thinly sliced onions with butter and sugar to caramelize their natural sugars. Flour is then stirred in to thicken the gravy, followed by thyme, Worcestershire sauce, red wine, and beef stock that simmer until rich and thick. This gravy has a chunky texture with deep, savory flavor from the onions and red wine.

Description

The recipe begins by melting butter and coating thinly sliced onions, then cooking them over low heat with a bit of sugar to bring out sweetness through caramelization. Adding plain flour creates a roux that thickens the gravy. Flavorings including dried thyme, Worcestershire sauce, red wine, and beef stock add layers of savory and acidic notes.

The gravy is simmered until thickened, carrying a rich, hearty flavor and a chunky texture due to the sliced onions. For those preferring a smoother gravy, the onions could be diced or the finished gravy blended.

This onion gravy pairs well with beef or other meats and can be enhanced with extras like Dijon mustard for tang or cream for richness. It requires patience during the slow cooking of onions to develop full flavor without burning the flour.

Adjustments include tasting for salt after cooking since stock and Worcestershire sauce provide saltiness. Cranberry sauce can be added for flavor variation.
