Easy Peach Compote
Description
This Peach Compote involves cooking peeled or unpeeled diced peaches with sugar and lemon juice in water. The mixture is brought to a boil then simmered to soften the peaches and thicken the sauce. The lemon juice adds brightness while the sugar balances tartness. Simmering gently breaks down the fruit, leaving some texture depending on whether the skins are left on.
The compote offers a fresh, fruity flavor with a syrupy consistency useful as a topping for breakfast dishes, desserts, or as a side condiment. Texture varies from tender peach pieces to a semi-thick sauce.
This compote can be served warm or cooled and stored in the refrigerator for up to five days. Freezing for up to two months is possible to preserve freshness and extend usability.
Adjust sweetness with different sugars or sweeteners. For thicker sauce, stirring in a cornstarch slurry and heating briefly will help achieve desired consistency.
Ingredients
- 5 peaches pitted and diced (no need to peel)
- 2 tablespoon sugar white, light brown etc
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 3 tablespoon water
Instructions
- Add the peaches, sugar, lemon juice and water to a pot, stir and bring to the boil. Allow it to boil for about 5 minutes, stirring often to stop it from scorching.
- Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer and bubble for 7-10 minutes until the peaches are soft and start to collapse. If you like more sauce, add a little more water and cook for a few more minutes.
- Serve warm or allow to cool and store in the fridge for up to 5 days (or freeze for up to 2 months).
Notes
- Leaving peach skins on adds texture but peeling is optional; remove pits carefully before cooking.
- Different sugars or sweeteners like brown sugar or honey can replace white sugar.
- Add more water during cooking for a thinner sauce or reduce cooking time for firmer fruit.
- To thicken the compote, stir in a cornstarch and water slurry, then heat briefly until thickened.
- Compote keeps in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or can be frozen for up to 2 months.
