Easy Red Sauce

This Easy Red Sauce uses a combination of fresh diced tomatoes, crushed canned tomatoes, and finely chopped poblano pepper to create a flavorful base. Sautéed onions and plenty of garlic bring depth, while red and black pepper add a mild spice. It simmers slowly to reduce into a thick sauce, finished with torn fresh basil for brightness. The use of red wine adds subtle richness and helps deglaze the pan for extra flavor. It's an adaptable sauce for pasta, pizza, or any dish needing a tomato base.

Description

Easy Red Sauce blends fresh and canned tomatoes with sautéed onions, garlic, and poblano pepper, giving it a layered tomato flavor and slight heat. The mixture is gently simmered for over an hour to concentrate flavors and thicken the sauce. Red and black pepper provide mild seasoning, while a touch of sugar balances acidity. The addition of red wine during cooking deglazes the pan and enriches the sauce. Torn fresh basil added at the end imparts a fresh herbal aroma.

The sauce's texture is hearty but smooth, with tender tomato pieces softened through slow simmering. This method also melds the flavors, making it a versatile tomato sauce suitable for a variety of Italian dishes. It serves well over pasta, as a pizza base, or as a complement to grilled meats or vegetables.

Storing the sauce properly helps maintain its flavor and freshness. It keeps refrigerated for several days or freezes well for future meals. Reheating gently on the stovetop or microwave preserves the sauce's texture. This recipe provides a solid foundation for homemade tomato sauce with balanced flavors and flexible usage.
