Easy Salmon Patties Recipe

These salmon patties combine oven-baked Alaska salmon with sautéed vegetables and herbs for a flavorful dish. The mixture is bound with eggs and breadcrumbs, seasoned with sumac, cumin, dill, and Dijon mustard, producing patties with a crispy golden exterior and tender, flaky interior. They can be pan-fried to finish and served with tzatziki sauce for added freshness.

Description

The Easy Salmon Patties Recipe uses baked salmon as the main protein, enhanced by sautéed shallots, onions, garlic, and red bell pepper for a mild, buttery vegetable flavor. Chopped olives add a briny note, while sumac and cumin contribute a gentle earthiness and subtle lemony tang. Dill and Dijon mustard bring herbal and tangy layers. Eggs and breadcrumbs bind the mixture, creating patties that hold together without being dense. Cooking in olive oil until golden crisp yields a patty with a firm crust and moist, flaky interior.

These patties are well suited for serving hot with tzatziki sauce, which adds creaminess and freshness to balance the savory flavors. They can be enjoyed as a main meal or in sandwiches with salad.

The recipe notes suggest alternatives including using canned salmon or substituting cornmeal and flour for breadcrumbs to create a variation known as southern salmon patties. Avoiding food processors preserves a flaky texture by manually flaking the salmon. Choosing between regular or panko breadcrumbs affects the patties’ softness.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 lb salmon Alaska
  • 4 tbsp olive oil divided
  • 1 shallot finely chopped
  • 1/2 yellow onion finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 red bell pepper diced
  • 1/2 cup olive chopped
  • 3 egg
  • 1 cup bread crumbs
  • 1 tsp sumac
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp pink salt
  • 1 tsp dill dried
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard
  • tzatziki sauce to serve

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400F. Coat a baking sheet with non stick spray.
  2. Place salmon pieces on the baking sheet and brush olive oil and sprinkle some salt and pepper on the salmon.
  3. Bake the salmon in the oven for 20 minutes.
  4. Meanwhile, heat two tablespoons olive oil in a pan and saute shallot, onion, garlic and bell pepper until vegetables are soft and onions are translucent.
  5. Once the salmon is cooked, flake it using a fork and place it in a large bowl.
  6. Add cooked shallots, onions, garlic and bell pepper to the flaked salmon and mix well.
  7. Add olives, eggs and bread crumbs to the mixture and mix well so all the ingredients are well incorporated.
  8. Add in sumac, cumin, salt, dried dill and Dijon mustard and stir well.
  9. Heat the remaining olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
  10. Scoop out the salmon patties and shape them with your hand.
  11. Pan fry the patties in the pan, four minutes on each side until they are crispy and golden on the outside.
  12. Serve with extra olive, rice or a side salad.

Notes

  • Canned Alaska salmon can replace fresh; if using canned, omit baking, begin with mixing ingredients, and remove large bones and skin as desired.
  • Panko or regular breadcrumbs work to bind patties; both yield a tender inside.
  • Do not process the salmon finely; hand-flake with a fork to maintain the flaky texture.
  • For southern-style patties, substitute breadcrumbs with 5 tablespoons cornmeal and 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour and fry the patties.
