Easy Sandwich Bread Recipe
Description
The dough combines flour, warm milk, melted butter, warm water, sugar, salt, and instant yeast, mixed until it forms a smooth dough. Kneading by hand or mixer develops gluten, giving the bread structure and elasticity. The dough undergoes a first rise in a greased bowl until doubled in size, approximately 1-2 hours depending on temperature.
After being punched down and rolled into a rectangle, the dough is shaped into a log and placed seam-side down in a greased bread pan. A second rise allows the dough to expand further, contributing to a tender crumb. Baking at 350°F for 30-35 minutes creates a golden crust while baking the loaf entirely through. Cooling on a rack before slicing ensures clean slices.
The bread's texture is soft and suitable for various sandwiches. Storing the cooled loaf in a plastic bag at room temperature keeps it fresh for up to a week. For longer storage, wrap the loaf in plastic wrap and foil to freeze for up to six months. This bread pairs well with fillings like chicken salad, egg salad, grilled cheese, and classics such as Monte Cristo or peanut butter and jam.
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour plus more as needed
- ½ cup milk warmed
- 4 tablespoons butter melted
- ½ cup water warm
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1¼ teaspoons salt
- 2¼ teaspoons instant yeast one packet
Instructions
- Add the flour, milk, butter, hot water, sugar, salt, and yeast to a large bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer. Mix until the dough starts to come together and pull away from the sides of the bowl, adding additional flour as needed to make a smooth dough.
- Transfer the dough to a greased or lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and pliable.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled, about 1-2 hours.
- Gently punch the dough down and roll it out into a 9x13-inch rectangle. Roll up the dough into a log starting on the shorter side.
- Place the dough in a greased bread pan seam side down, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
- Toward the end of the rise time, preheat the oven to 350°F. After the dough has risen, bake 30-35 minutes, until golden brown on top. Remove from the oven and let cool completely on a rack before slicing and serving.
Notes
- The bread requires two proofs which can take over 2 hours; warmer environments speed this up.
- Store the cooled bread in a plastic bag at room temperature for up to one week.
- For longer storage, freeze the loaf wrapped in plastic wrap and foil for up to six months.
- This bread works well for a variety of sandwich recipes like Monte Cristo, egg salad, chicken salad, grilled cheese, and peanut butter with jam.
