Easy Sautéed Sweet Potatoes

Easy Sautéed Sweet Potatoes are thinly sliced and cooked in olive oil with black pepper, salt, lemon juice, and red chili powder. The result is tender, slightly spiced sweet potatoes with a hint of citrus. The simple pan sauté method uses minimal oil but yields flavorful side dish suitable for warm servings accompanied by dips.

Description

The recipe calls for peeling and slicing sweet potatoes thinly to allow quick and even cooking when sautéed in a heavy-bottomed wok or skillet over low to medium heat with olive oil and seasoning. Salt, black pepper, and red chili powder flavor the potatoes, which are cooked covered to soften efficiently. A final sprinkle of fresh lemon juice adds brightness.

This method produces tender sweet potato slices with a balance of subtle heat and fresh acidity. The minimal oil cooking keeps the dish lighter than deep-fried alternatives. Adjusting the thickness of slices affects texture: thinner for sautéing, thicker for deep frying and more crispiness.

Serve these sautéed sweet potatoes warm as a simple accompaniment to main dishes or with your preferred dips. The spices can be adjusted to taste depending on desired heat level.

For best results, use a heavy skillet to prevent sticking due to the starch and minimal oil. Letting the potatoes rest covered at the end helps complete cooking. Thin slicing is crucial for uniform doneness and avoids raw centers.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup sweet potato 200 gm
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper can adjust the heat
  • 1 teaspoon salt can adjust as per taste
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice fresh
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder adjust the heat

Instructions

  1. Wash the sweet potato under tap as it may be muddy. Let it dry for a while. Peel and wash again. Slice it in thin as we would pan fry them in minimum oil. If you are deep frying them, about ½ inch slice would work. If you really like crispy sweet potatoes and need a quicker recipe, be generous with oil.I have slice in round. you may chop them in any shape.
  2. In a heavy bottomed wok, heat the olive oil. Once it's warm, add salt and spices and sweet potato. Mix well and let it cook on simmer for about 5-10 min. Cover it with a lid for quick cooking. Keep a close watch and keep stirring so that the cooking is uniform. The sweet potatoes would be tender soon and would be easily cut by spatula.
  3. Let them sit in the wok for about 2 min or till warm. Sprinkle lemon juice and serve warm with a choice of your dip and Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use a heavy-bottomed or iron skillet to minimize sticking when sautéing with little oil.
  • Cover the skillet during cooking to speed up the softening of sweet potatoes.
  • Let the cooked potatoes rest covered in the pan for a couple of minutes before serving to finish cooking gently.
  • For a crispier result, consider baking or frying with more oil and thicker slices.
  • Slice thinly and uniformly for even cooking and to avoid raw centers.
