Easy Six Ingredient Dinner Rolls!

Easy Six Ingredient Dinner Rolls are soft yeast rolls made from basic pantry ingredients including flour, milk, butter, sugar, salt, and yeast. The method involves combining warm milk and butter with dry ingredients to form a dough, which is then kneaded and allowed to rise before shaping and baking. The rolls develop a tender crumb and a golden crust, ideal for dinner or sandwiches.

Description

This recipe produces soft and fluffy dinner rolls using six straightforward ingredients: all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, active yeast, milk, and butter. The warm milk and melted butter activate the yeast and combine with the dry mix of flour, sugar, and salt to form a dough. Kneading by hand or mixer forms a soft, elastic dough suitable for rising.

After mixing, the dough is left to rise in a warm, draft-free location until doubled in size, which may take 15-60 minutes depending on ambient temperature. Shaping the dough into even rolls ensures uniform baking and a golden brown exterior. Baking times vary, so monitoring for a golden crust and firm texture guides doneness.

The notes emphasize the importance of using lukewarm milk to avoid killing the yeast and suggest different methods to provide a warm rising environment, such as a lightly warmed oven. Butter and milk options can be plant-based or dairy. Allowing sufficient rise time improves texture and flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • ¼ ounce Fast action yeast 1 envelope
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour divided, you may use less or more
  • ½ cup milk regular or almond works great!, of choice
  • ¼ cup water
  • 2 tablespoons butter regular or vegan, plus extra for brushing

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of sugar, 1 packet of fast action or instant yeast, ½ teaspoon of salt, and 1 ¾ cup of flour, and mix well with a fork. Reserve.
  2. Heat ½ cup milk of choice, ¼ cup of water, and 2 tablespoons of butter of choice in a glass jar for 45 seconds to 1 minute in the microwave until warm (make sure they are not too hot!) Alternatively, bring the mixture to a gentle simmer until it barely starts boiling on the stove, and transfer it to another pot.
  3. Pour the wet mixture over the dry ingredients.
  4. With the help of an electric mixer (stand or hand mixer) with the dough hook attached, beat for 2 minutes on medium speed, scraping the bowl as needed. Alternatively, use a silicone spatula and mix well until combined.
  5. Use enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough (adding a little each time to prevent adding too much) - up to ¼ cup of flour - while beating, on high speed for a further 2 minutes until a soft dough has formed. The dough will feel slightly sticky, but not stick to your hands or feel unworkable.
  6. Take the dough to a clean, lightly floured surface and work the dough with your hands until smooth and elastic, for about 7 to 8 minutes.
  7. Put the dough back in the bowl, cover with a clean cloth and leave to rise for 10 to 15 minutes in a warm place. The dough should rise about ¼ to ½ of its size at least (but longer the rise time, the better!) See notes for more details.
  8. Preheat the oven to 375ºF / 190ºC.
  9. Gently scrape the dough from the bowl and divide it into 12 equal balls.
  10. Place in a greased 8-inch, round, rectangular or square baking pan. Cover with the cloth and let it rise for an extra 15 to 20 minutes. Again, longer the better! See notes for make-ahead instructions to maximize overnight rise time.
  11. Bake the dinner rolls for 20 minutes. However, start checking them at 15 minutes to make sure they're not too brown. If they are, then add some foil on top so they continue cooking but don't burn. At 20 minutes, check one of the rolls in the center to make sure they're done cooking.
  12. Remove from the oven and leave to cool before removing from the pan, brush a little extra melted butter on top and serve warm. Enjoy your buttery soft dinner rolls!

Notes

  • Use lukewarm milk to preserve yeast activity and ensure proper dough rise.
  • Allow rolls to rise in a warm, draft-free environment; a warmed oven or oven light can help maintain temperature.
  • Portion rolls evenly to promote uniform baking and consistent texture.
  • Choose butter and milk types that suit dietary preferences; both regular and plant-based options work.
  • Check rolls around 15-17 minutes into baking for desired golden color; cover with foil if browning too quickly.
