Easy Steamed Broccoli
Description
This straightforward recipe steams fresh broccoli florets over simmering water using a steamer basket, cooking them until they are tender to the fork but not mushy, typically around 5 to 7 minutes. Steaming retains the broccoli's bright color and fresh flavor better than boiling.
Once cooked, the broccoli is seasoned simply with kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper, and a pinch of red pepper flakes for a mild heat. A drizzle of olive oil adds a richness that enhances the vegetable's natural earthiness and helps distribute the spices.
This steamed broccoli makes a versatile side dish that accompanies a wide variety of main courses. It can be served warm immediately after cooking, preserving its tender-crisp texture.
Ingredients
- 2 lb. broccoli cut into florets
- 2 cups of water
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper ground

- Cover with a lid and cook for 5-7 minutes (if using larger pieces) or until broccoli is tender when pierced with a fork but not mushy.
