Easy Sweet Green Beans

Easy Sweet Green Beans are made by briefly boiling fresh green beans until bright and slightly crisp, then tossing them with a sweet-savory sauce of melted butter, brown sugar, and soy sauce. The result is tender yet crunchy green beans glazed with a rich, caramelized coating that complements plain sides or main dishes. This simple side dish adds a touch of sweetness balanced by umami from soy sauce.

Description

The recipe begins by boiling washed and trimmed green beans for about five minutes to achieve a vibrant green color and maintain a bit of crunch. They are then drained and combined with a sauce made from melted butter, brown sugar, and soy sauce.

Tossing the beans in this mixture coats them evenly, producing a sweet and slightly salty glaze. The texture remains lively, avoiding sogginess, with the glaze adding depth and a pleasant sheen.

This side pairs well with rice and can complement a variety of main dishes by offering a sweetened vegetable option with balanced flavors. The method keeps preparation straightforward and adaptable.

The recipe can be doubled for larger groups, and leftovers store well refrigerated or frozen. Reheating is best done gently on the stovetop to preserve texture and flavor.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 3-4 cups Green bean fresh, cut
  • ¼ cup butter melted
  • ½ cup brown sugar packed
  • ¼ cup soy sauce

Instructions

  1. Heat water in a pot large enough to hold all of your beans until boiling.
  2. Wash, trim and cut your green beans into bite sized pieces while you are waiting for the water to boil.
  3. When water is boiling and your beans are prepared dump them into the boiling water for about 5 minutes or bright green.
  4. While beans are boiling grab a medium bowl and combine soy sauce, melted butter and brown sugar.  Stir or whisk until blended.  Set aside.
  5. When beans are cooked drain them in a colander in the sink or how ever you prefer.  Return beans to the pot and add the soy mixture on top of the beans.  Toss beans in mixture until they are all coated.  Serve immediately.
  6. I always serve this dish with rice.  I usually serve the beans beside or on top of the rice with a little extra sauce drizzled all over!

Notes

  • This recipe can be doubled easily to serve more people.
  • Avoid overcooking the green beans to retain a desirable crunch.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 7 days or freeze up to 3 months.
  • To reheat, warm gently in a skillet over low heat until heated through.
