Easy Teriyaki Sauce (So Flavorful!)

This teriyaki sauce blends soy sauce, sake, mirin, and honey simmered together until slightly thickened to create a balanced, mildly sweet glaze. Its simple preparation and classic ingredients make it suitable as a versatile sauce for glazing meats, vegetables, or stir-fries, with readily available ingredients in many supermarkets or Asian markets.

Description

Easy Teriyaki Sauce combines equal parts soy sauce, sake, and mirin, sweetened with honey, then heated to dissolve the honey and simmered until the sauce thickens slightly. This results in a syrupy consistency that clings well to grilled or sautéed foods.

The ingredients provide a harmonious balance of salty, sweet, and umami flavors typical of teriyaki. Preparing the sauce at home allows control over sweetness and thickness. It is best used immediately or cooled and refrigerated for later use.

Sake and mirin can usually be found in well-stocked supermarkets or Asian grocery stores. The sauce yields about half a cup, and a serving is approximately two tablespoons.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup sake
  • 1/4 cup mirin
  • 2 tablespoons honey

Instructions

  1. Add the soy sauce, sake, mirin and honey into a saucepan over medium-high heat.
  2. Bring it to a boil and continuously stir the mixture until the honey dissolves. Then reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for about 10 minutes, or until it's slightly thickened.
  3. Remove the pan from the heat and use it immediately or store away. If you plan to store it away, make sure to let the sauce cool a little before refrigerating.

Notes

  • This recipe makes about 1/2 cup of sauce, with a serving size of approximately 2 tablespoons.
  • Sake and mirin are often available in larger supermarkets; local Asian markets offer more options if needed.
