Easy Vegan Gravy (Gluten-Free, 5 Minutes!)

This Easy Vegan Gravy blends vegetable broth, nutritional yeast, and thyme to create a smooth, flavorful sauce with a subtle herbaceous note. Its gluten-free option uses fine oat or rice flour, thickened and enriched with olive oil for a silky texture. The gravy cooks quickly on the stove, providing a versatile sauce to accompany a variety of dishes.

Description

Easy Vegan Gravy (Gluten-Free, 5 Minutes!) combines vegetable broth with a mixture of flour, nutritional yeast, and dried thyme. The recipe uses olive oil for richness while thickening the mixture on the stove, resulting in a glossy, smooth gravy. It’s seasoned simply with salt and black pepper, balancing the flavors without overpowering. The use of gluten-free flours such as oat or rice flour makes it accessible for gluten-sensitive diets.

The texture is slightly thick but pourable, ideal for drizzling over mashed potatoes, vegetables, or vegan protein dishes. The thyme contributes a savory, earthy nuance that complements the nutritional yeast's subtle cheesy taste without dairy.

After cooking, the gravy can be served immediately or cooled and stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. It may also be frozen and reheated gently. The recipe notes suggest adjustments like using powdered thyme cautiously and offer flour alternatives for gluten-free needs.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 cup vegetable broth
  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour or fine oat flour; see Notes, gluten-free
  • 2 Tablespoons nutritional yeast
  • 1 teaspoon thyme not powdered; see Notes, dried
  • ¼ cup olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt adjust to taste, fine sea salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper or more to taste

Instructions

  1. First, combine the broth and water and warm them on the stove or in a microwave (they don't need to be hot, just not cold). Set aside.
  2. In a heavy-bottom saucepan, whisk together the flour, nutritional yeast, and thyme. Place the pan over medium-low heat, and while whisking, drizzle in the olive oil. Whisk until smooth, and then continue to whisk and cook for about 30 seconds or until glossy and hot.
  3. Add the salt and pepper. While whisking, slowly pour in the broth and water. The gravy may look clumpy for a moment but will smooth out as you continue to whisk. Keep stirring and cook until hot and thickened, 2-3 minutes. Taste for seasoning.
  4. Serve hot or allow to cool completely before storing in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • Use gluten-free flour options such as oat or rice flour to maintain the recipe’s gluten-free quality.
  • If using powdered thyme, start with a smaller amount and adjust to taste to avoid overpowering the gravy.
  • Store cooled gravy in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze for longer storage.
  • Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave to preserve texture and flavor.
