Easy Vegan Tartar Sauce
Description
Prepared by whisking vegan mayo, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, and maple syrup until smooth, the sauce is then combined with diced dill pickles and shallots plus salt and pepper, adding bursts of tang and subtle crunch. Adjusting the mustard, maple syrup, or pepper allows tailoring of tanginess, sweetness, and spice level. Best served fresh, this vegan tartar sauce complements breaded dishes like vegan crab cakes or fries, providing a creamy, piquant layer of flavor.
Stored in the refrigerator, leftovers maintain quality for 3 to 4 days, and should be kept in a sealed container. This sauce is not suitable for freezing due to its base ingredients.
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Vegan mayo (or store-bought)
- 2 tsp Dijon mustard
- 1 Tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp maple syrup
- 2 Tbsp dill pickle finely diced
- 2 Tbsp shallot finely diced
- 1 pinch sea salt
- 1 pinch black pepper
Instructions
- In a small bowl whisk together vegan mayo, mustard, lemon juice, and maple syrup until well combined.
- Add diced pickle, diced shallot, salt, and pepper and stir until evenly combined.
- Taste and adjust seasonings as needed, adding more mustard for tang, maple syrup for sweetness, or black pepper for spice.
- Enjoy with vegan crab cakes, onion rings, fries, or your favorite breaded creations!
- Best when fresh. Store leftovers in a sealed container in the refrigerator up to 3-4 days. Not freezer friendly.
Notes
- Use fresh vegan mayo and finely dice the pickles and shallots for best texture.
- Adjust seasonings after blending to balance sweetness, tang, and spice according to taste.
- Store in a sealed container in the refrigerator and consume within 3-4 days; not ideal for freezing.
- Pairs well with vegan fried foods like crab cakes, onion rings, or fries.
