Egg Roll in a Bowl
Description
This recipe begins by browning ground pork (or other preferred ground meat), seasoned simply with black pepper. Garlic and freshly grated ginger are added early to infuse fragrant notes. Meanwhile, onions and coleslaw mix are cooked separately in sesame oil until soft and wilted, providing a tender, mild vegetable base.
The cooked meat is reincorporated with the vegetables, then combined with a savory sauce blend of soy sauce, hoisin sauce, and rice vinegar, creating layers of salty, sweet, and tangy flavors. The final dish is garnished with chopped green onions, fresh cilantro, and basil, lending fresh herbal brightness that contrasts with the cooked ingredients.
This versatile skillet dish can be served on its own or accompanied by cooked white or cauliflower rice for a more filling meal. Optional hot sauces or dipping sauces such as duck sauce and peanut sauce offer additional flavor enhancements. It also makes a practical meal prep option since it keeps well refrigerated for several days.
For gluten-free adaptations, substitute soy sauce and hoisin sauce with gluten-free versions. The recipe accommodates different meats or even cooked shrimp, making it adaptable to various preferences.
