Eggnog Cookies

Eggnog Cookies blend warm spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves with classic cookie ingredients and eggnog, delivering soft, spiced cookies that capture holiday flavors. Rolled in sugar and lightly pressed before baking, these cookies develop a tender texture and a subtle spiced sweetness ideal for festive occasions.

Description

The recipe starts by combining dry ingredients including flour, baking powder, salt, and a mixture of ground warm spices—cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves—that define the eggnog flavor profile. Butter and sugar are creamed together until smooth before adding eggnog, vanilla, and an egg to create a spiced batter.

Dough balls are formed and rolled in sugar, adding a slight crunchy coating. They are spaced on a lined cookie sheet and baked until their bottoms lightly brown, resulting in cookies that are soft inside with gently crisped edges. The warm spices provide a fragrant background, echoing traditional holiday eggnog beverages.

These cookies make a seasonal treat, well suited to winter gatherings and enjoyed with coffee or tea. While the recipe mentions frosting, the cookies can also be enjoyed plain.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves ground
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter softened, unsalted
  • 1/4 cup eggnog
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line cookies sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Combine the flour, salt, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and cloves together in a small bowl.
  3. Using an electric mixer cream the sugar and butter together in a large bowl.
  4. Add the eggnog, vanilla, and egg beating at medium speed until smooth.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Beat at low speed just until blended.
  6. Create 2 tablespoon sized balls of cookie dough. Gently roll into a ball, then roll each ball in the additional sugar to coat. Place the balls on the prepared baking sheet and slightly press down.
  7. Leave 1 inch between each cookie.
  8. Sprinkle lightly with additional nutmeg.
  9. Bake at 350 degrees for about 10-12 minutes. (Or until bottoms turn light brown.)
  10. Allow the cookies to cool slightly before transferring to a wire rack.
  11. Leave the cookies on a wire rack to cool completely.
  12. When cookies are cool, frost them with the buttercream frosting if desired and sprinkle a little cinnamon on top of the frosting.
  13. Serve and enjoy!
