Enchilada Seasoning

Enchilada Seasoning is a balanced dry spice blend of chili powder, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, paprika, oregano, and cocoa powder. This mix adds depth and mild heat to Mexican-style sauces and dishes. It's simple to prepare and can be stored for months, helping to create flavorful enchilada sauces and other southwestern recipes at home.

Description

The recipe combines common dried spices such as chili powder, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, paprika, oregano, and a touch of cocoa powder, which adds subtle earthiness. The blend is mixed thoroughly and kept airtight for up to six months to maintain freshness. It serves as a base for creating authentic enchilada sauces by combining it with tomato sauce and liquid.

The seasoning yields a mild heat profile, easily adjustable by adding cayenne pepper if a spicier result is desired. Its well-rounded flavor incorporates smoky, savory, and slightly bitter notes from the included spices, particularly the cocoa powder and paprika.

To use the seasoning for enchilada sauce, it is stirred into tomato sauce and water or broth, then simmered briefly. The seasoning also works for seasoning proteins and vegetables for enchilada filling or other Mexican-inspired dishes. Its gluten-free and sugar-free nature makes it versatile for different dietary needs.

Storing the blend in a labeled airtight jar helps with longevity and ensures the seasoning remains potent for up to half a year before losing intensity.
