English Muffin Tuna Melts

English Muffin Tuna Melts combine toasted English muffin halves with a creamy tuna salad enhanced by celery, green onion, and sweet relish. They are topped with melted provolone cheese for a melty finish. The toasting of the English muffins adds a pleasant crunch, contrasting with the soft, rich filling, making it suitable for a quick lunch or casual dinner option.

Description

English Muffin Tuna Melts feature English muffins that are lightly toasted before being topped with a tuna salad made of solid white albacore tuna, finely diced celery, sliced green onions, and sweet relish mixed into mayonnaise. This blend offers a balance of creamy and crunchy textures. The melts are then covered with provolone cheese slices and baked until the cheese melts and starts to brown. The recipe is practical for using pantry staples and offers flexibility in bread choice and toasting preferences.

The toasting step can be adjusted, depending on whether a crisp or soft base is preferred. The cheese melts evenly over the tuna salad, locking in moisture and adding richness. The garnishing with remaining green onions adds freshness and mild sharpness to the flavor profile.

The tuna melts pair well with light sides for lunch or make a comforting snack. The recipe allows easy customization for dietary or taste preferences, including alternative bread choices.

Variations in preparation include heating in different appliances such as toaster ovens or air fryers and even microwaving for a softer result. Choosing different brands or types of English muffins or breads affects texture and taste subtly.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 English Muffin sliced in half (see notes
  • 12 oz. tuna preferably solid white albacore packed in water, drained, canned
  • 1 rib celery finely diced
  • 2 green onions thinly sliced, some dark green parts reserved
  • 1 tablespoon sweet relish
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste
  • 8 lices provolone cheese or other melty cheese

Instructions

  1. Line your baking sheet with parchment paper or foil, for easy clean-up (optional). Place the halved English muffins cut-side-up on top. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Put the English muffins in the oven while it preheats, to toast them up a bit.
  2. Meanwhile, mix the tuna salad. In a medium bowl, mix canned tuna (flake apart with a fork first), diced celery, green onion, sweet relish (1 tablespoon), mayonnaise (½ cup), and salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Take the English muffins out of the oven. Spoon the tuna salad on top of each English muffin half evenly, pressing down on the top with the back of your spoon to pack it on a bit. Place a slice of cheese on top of each. Put back in the oven at 425 degrees F for about 10 minutes, until cheese is melted on top and starting to brown in places.
  4. Garnish with the remaining dark green sliced onions and serve.

Notes

  • Choose your favorite English muffins or swap them for other bread slices for different textures.
  • Pre-toasting the muffins adds crunch, but skip if you prefer a softer base.
  • This can be adapted for toaster oven or air fryer cooking for convenience.
  • Microwaving is an option if a softer, quickly melted cheese topping is desired.
