Extra Cheesy Garlic Bread

Extra Cheesy Garlic Bread is a rich, flavorful side featuring a French bread loaf spread with a seasoned garlic butter, then layered with Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses. The bread is baked until the cheese bubbles and turns golden, creating a crisp edge with a soft, cheesy interior. This recipe suits shareable appetizers or a comforting accompaniment to meals and allows adjustment of seasoning for different preferences.

Description

Extra Cheesy Garlic Bread starts with softened butter blended with minced garlic, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, parsley, salt, and black pepper to create a flavorful spread. This is applied liberally to halved French bread cut horizontally. Parmesan cheese is sprinkled first for a slightly sharp, savory layer followed by shredded mozzarella for creamy meltiness. Baking at 400°F ensures the bread crispness while bubbling and lightly browning the cheeses.

The result is bread with a crunchy crust and a tender, cheesy middle. The garlic and Italian herbs add an aromatic depth typical in garlic bread recipes. The use of Parmesan introduces a nutty sharpness contrasted by the mild mozzarella.

This bread can accompany salads or be an appetizer for gatherings. Its seasoning can be adjusted by omitting added salt if preferred or using salted butter. Serve freshly baked to enjoy the warm, melted cheese and aromatic garlic butter fully.

Serving size varies; enough for 2-4 people as a meal side or several as an appetizer.Salt additions can be adjusted by omitting extra salt if salted butter is used or to reduce sodium. This recipe is published in the Salt & Lavender: Everyday Essentials cookbook (page 239).

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup butter softened, 1 stick
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon parsley + extra for serving, chopped, fresh
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • black pepper to taste
  • 1 (16 ounce) loaf French bread
  • 1 cup Parmesan Cheese freshly grated
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded

Instructions

  1. Take the butter out of the fridge at least an hour prior to starting the recipe.
  2. Preheat your oven to 400F and move the rack to the top third of the oven.
  3. Add the butter, garlic, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, parsley, and salt & pepper to a small bowl. Mash together with a fork until well combined.
  4. Cut the loaf of bread in half horizontally (try to get the two halves as equally sized as possible) and place each piece cut-side up on a baking sheet.
  5. Spread the butter over the cut side of each half of bread, then top each half with the parmesan, followed by the mozzarella.
  6. Bake for 12 minutes, then broil for a few minutes (watch it carefully so it doesn't burn!) until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
  7. Cut into slices and serve immediately with extra parsley sprinkled over top.
