Farro
Description
Farro is cooked by first rinsing the grains and then boiling them in salted water or broth until tender, which typically takes around 30 minutes on the stove. Alternatively, it can be prepared in an Instant Pot with a brief high-pressure cook followed by natural release, or cooked in a rice cooker over a longer period. This flexibility allows cooks to adapt the process according to available equipment.
The resulting cooked farro has a nutty flavor and chewy texture that stands up well in a variety of dishes. It can be served hot or cold, making it suitable for grain bowls, salads, or as a side to proteins or vegetables. The simple seasoning with salt enhances the grain’s natural taste without overpowering it.
Package instructions vary depending on brand and processing, so checking the specific cooking time recommended for the farro you have is beneficial. Rinsing before cooking removes dust and surface starch. Using broth instead of water can add extra depth to the grain's taste.
