Fast Caramelized Onions Recipe

This Fast Caramelized Onions Recipe transforms sliced yellow onions into sweet, golden caramelized onions using butter and brown sugar. The cooking process is broken into two stages: first softening and then slow caramelizing to develop sweetness and color. Optional additions like balsamic vinegar can add a tangy contrast to the rich sweetness of the onions.

Description

Begin by slicing yellow onions into thin half-moons and cooking them in butter over medium heat until translucent. Brown sugar is added as heat lowers, and the onions are cooked while stirring often to prevent burning until they reach a deep golden brown color.

The onions develop a rich sweetness with a tender texture and can be further caramelized by cooking a bit longer for an intensified flavor and smaller yield. Variations include using red or Vidalia onions for different sweetness profiles, and a splash of balsamic vinegar at the end adds a tangy layer.

These onions are versatile for enhancing dishes like burgers, sandwiches, or savory tarts. The method balances speed and depth of flavor for convenient caramelized onions with great taste.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 yellow onion you can also use red onions or vidalia onions, medium or large
  • 4 tablespoon butter unsalted
  • 1 teaspoons brown sugar
  • salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Cut onions in half. Slice each onion half lengthwise into ¼-inch half-moons.
  2. Set a cast iron or nonstick pan with a thick bottom to medium heat. Add butter (or oil), and melt fully.
  3. Add the onions to the pan (if you have more onions that can easily fit in one pan, add them in batches, waiting until onions become translucent before adding the next batch). Cook, stirring occasionally, over medium heat until the onions change color, about 5-10 minutes.
  4. Lower the heat to medium-low and add the brown sugar. Cook, stirring the pan often to prevent burning, until the onions fully caramelize and become golden brown, for about 15 minutes.
  5. For extra brown caramelized onions, cook the onions for an additional 10 minutes. They will be extra sweet, but this will also produce the smallest amount of caramelized onions as they continue shrinking while they cook.

Notes

  • Swap yellow onions with red or Vidalia onions for milder or sweeter flavor variations.
  • Add a splash of balsamic vinegar in the last 5 minutes to introduce tangy contrast.
