Fish Pakora

Fish Pakora consists of bite-sized pieces of cod coated in a spiced gram flour batter and deep-fried to a golden crisp. The batter blends gram flour with chili, turmeric, crushed coriander seeds, ginger, garlic, lemon juice, and an egg, producing a flavorful, crispy coating around tender fish chunks. Served with a yogurt-based chutney, this preparation offers crunchy texture and a punch of savory spices.

Description

This Fish Pakora recipe features cod fish cut into small pieces and dipped in a batter made from gram flour, various spices including chili powder, turmeric, crushed coriander seeds, garlic and ginger pastes, lemon juice, and an egg, with water added to achieve the right consistency. The batter coating crisps up when deep-fried in moderately hot oil, yielding an even golden exterior while keeping the fish moist inside.

The pakoras are cooked undisturbed for several minutes on each side to develop a crunchy crust. They are traditionally accompanied by homemade yogurt chutney, which adds coolness and tanginess to balance the heat and texture of the fried fish. The dish is suitable as a snack, appetizer, or part of a meal.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 500 g fish Cod
  • 100 g gram flour Besan
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder Haldi
  • 1 tsp chilli pepper crushed
  • 2 tsp coriander seeds crushed
  • 1 tsp garlic paste
  • 1 tsp ginger paste
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 100 ml water

Instructions

  1. Cut the fish into bite-sized chunks
  2. Add all the ingredients, except the fish, into a large bowl and whisk until a smooth batter with no lumps forms
  3. Add the fish chunks into the batter and coat the fish pieces with the batter evenly
  4. Heat a pan with oil for deep frying until medium-hot ensuring that the oil is not too hot – to test this you can add a small ball of the batter into the pan, and it should rise with tiny bubbles surrounding it
  5. Gently add the fish into the pan – there should be tiny bubbles surrounding them – and allow them to cook undisturbed for 3-4 minutes until golden brown before flipping and allowing to cook for another 2-3 minutes until golden brown on the other side
  6. Serve with homemade yoghurt chutney and enjoy!

Notes

  • Use medium-hot oil for frying; test by dropping a small amount of batter— it should bubble and rise slowly.
  • Fry the fish pakoras undisturbed for a few minutes each side for even golden crispiness.
  • Serve freshly fried with yogurt chutney for best texture and flavor.
