Freezer French Toast Casserole
Description
The Freezer French Toast Casserole starts by cubing Texas Toast bread and soaking it in a mixture of milk, evaporated milk, eggs, cinnamon, and vanilla extract. The soaked bread is spread in a greased baking dish, then covered with a topping made from brown sugar, butter, oats, maple syrup, and evaporated milk, crumbled evenly over the top.
Baked at 375°F until the center tests clean and the topping turns golden brown, it creates a custardy interior with a sweet, crisp oat topping. The recipe suggests serving with whipped cream, syrup, or powdered sugar and mentions that day-old bread gives better texture. Fresh fruit or nuts can be added for variation.
This casserole can also be assembled and refrigerated overnight before baking or frozen for later, offering planning convenience without sacrificing texture.
Ingredients
- 6 lices Texas Toast bread
- 3/4 cup milk
- 6 oz evaporated milk 1/2 can
- 3 egg
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 tbsp evaporated milk
- 1/2 cup oats
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 °F degrees.
- Grease an 8" x 8" baking pan (or any 2-quart size pan).
- Chop or break apart the bread into about 1 inch pieces or squares. Add to a large bowl.
- In a separate bowl mix together your milk, 6 oz evaporated milk, eggs, cinnamon and vanilla. Whisk until well combined.
- Pour the liquid mixture over your bread pieces and gently turn over pieces until all the bread pieces are thoroughly soaked. Pour gently into greased baking pan and spread evenly.
- Make the topping by adding the ingredients to a medium bowl and mixing together until well combined.
- Spoon topping mixture over the top of the bread mixture in the pan evenly until top is covered.
Make It Now
- Bake uncovered in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes until a tester in the center comes out clean and topping is golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool 5 minutes then serve with whipped cream, syrup or a sprinkling of powdered sugar.
Freeze It For Later
- Wrap the assembled pan tightly with plastic wrap, pressing down to gently remove air. Then cover with foil, label it and freeze it for up to 6 months.
- To bake, remove from freezer and preheat oven. Remove plastic wrap and foil. Recover with foil and place frozen pan directly into oven and bake for 55 to 60 minutes, removing foil after first 20 minutes. Bake until a tester in the center comes out clean and topping is golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool 5 minutes with whipped cream, syrup or a sprinkling of powdered sugar.
Notes
- Use crusty or slightly stale bread for the best texture; fresh bread may lead to a soggier casserole center.
- Serve with toppings like fresh fruit, whipped cream, syrup, or powdered sugar for added flavor and presentation.
- The casserole can be assembled ahead and refrigerated overnight, then baked fresh in the morning.
- Freezing the assembled casserole before baking is possible for later use without loss of quality.
