French Dip Hot Turkey Sandwiches

French Dip Hot Turkey Sandwiches feature thinly sliced turkey heated in broth and layered with caramelized onions and melted cheese on bread. The onions are sautéed until golden amber, adding depth of flavor, while the turkey is gently warmed in broth to keep it moist. Served with hot gravy for dipping, these sandwiches offer a comforting balance of savory ingredients and sauces ideal for a hearty lunch or dinner.

Description

French Dip Hot Turkey Sandwiches combine tender turkey slices warmed in broth, rich caramelized onions, and melted cheese on bread slices, served with hot gravy for dipping. The onions are cooked in butter with salt until soft and then caramelized to a golden amber color, imparting sweetness and depth to the sandwich. The turkey is heated carefully in broth, which keeps it moist without drying out. Cheese, placed on bread before adding onions and turkey, melts slightly from the hot ingredients.

The assembly involves layering cheese, onions, then turkey on slices of bread, sprinkled with black pepper before closing into sandwiches. These are accompanied by hot gravy, enhancing the moistness and flavor with every dip. The combination of textures from soft caramelized onions, melted cheese, and warm turkey creates a rich and satisfying experience.

Various substitutions are possible: any onion variety for caramelizing, different broth types for warming turkey, and any preferred cheese will work. Bread can be toasted or chosen according to preference. Using leftover gravy thinned with broth is suggested for the dip. This versatile sandwich is practical for utilizing leftovers or deli turkey and can be adapted to available ingredients.

Notes

  • Use any onion type you prefer—white, yellow, or red all caramelize well for this recipe.
  • Broth options include chicken, turkey, or vegetable; if unavailable, water with salt or bouillon works as a substitute.
  • Leftover turkey or deli-sliced thick turkey are both suitable; thick country loaf, hoagie rolls, or baguette can be used for the bread.
  • Toasting the bread before assembling adds texture but is optional.
  • Feel free to use any cheese you like, including leftovers from a cheese board.
  • If using leftover gravy, thin with broth used for heating turkey if it’s too thick for dipping.
  • If making fresh gravy, follow an appropriate quick recipe to complement the sandwiches.
