French Onion Beef Casserole
Description
The French Onion Beef Casserole starts by cooking egg noodles until slightly underdone to avoid overcooking during baking. Ground beef is browned and drained before combining with condensed cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, French onion soup mix, sherry, and Worcestershire sauce for a flavorful creamy base. Tossing the noodles into this mixture integrates the components evenly.
After mixing in the cooked beef, the casserole is assembled in a baking dish with grated gruyere cheese layered on top, followed by a generous covering of fried onions. Baking with a foil cover initially and then uncovered allows the dish to become hot and bubbly while crisping the onion topping. The casserole balances creamy textures with cheesy melted layers and crispy onions for texture contrast.
This casserole pairs well with steamed vegetables or a fresh salad for a complete meal. It works well for gatherings or comforting dinners with straightforward preparation. The recipe includes practical tips like slightly undercooking noodles and draining excess fat from beef to keep the dish from becoming greasy. Storing leftovers in an airtight container and reheating in the oven can help preserve the onion topping’s texture.
