French Onion Chicken Bake

French Onion Chicken Bake combines seared boneless skinless chicken breasts with a savory sauce of beef broth, balsamic vinegar, thyme, and garlic. Topped with caramelized onions, Swiss and mozzarella cheeses, and crunchy garlic-flavored croutons, then baked, the dish delivers tender chicken with melted cheese and a rich onion topping. Fresh herbs finish the plate, making it suitable for a comforting, flavorful main course.

Description

This recipe begins by whisking together beef broth, balsamic vinegar, dried thyme, garlic powder, black pepper, and kosher salt to create a flavorful liquid base. Chicken breasts are seared in olive oil until browned on all sides but not fully cooked. The broth mixture is poured over the chicken and heated to a low simmer, helping cook the chicken gently in the oven.

Caramelized onions provide a sweet, mellow contrast to the savory components and are layered atop the chicken with shredded Swiss (or Gruyere) and mozzarella cheeses. Baking at 350°F for about 16 to 18 minutes completes the cooking process, ensuring the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 160°F before resting to 165°F with carry-over heat. The melted cheeses create a creamy, rich topping that pairs well with the onions and broth.

Before serving, garlic-flavored croutons add a crunchy texture on top, and fresh thyme or parsley garnish brings a fresh herbaceous note. This dish suits a comforting dinner and pairs nicely with simple sides that can absorb the flavorful broth. Resting the chicken after baking helps retain juices and achieve optimal tenderness.
