French Onion Dip

French Onion Dip blends caramelized yellow onions with a mixture of cream cheese, mayonnaise, yogurt, and seasonings for a rich and creamy appetizer. The slow cooking of onions with butter and sugar until golden brown develops a deep, sweet flavor that balances the tangy dairy base. This dip benefits from resting in the refrigerator to meld flavors and works well as a cold dip served with chips or vegetables.

Description

The French Onion Dip recipe centers on finely sliced yellow onions cooked slowly in butter and sugar until caramelized and deeply golden. Adding minced garlic at the end enhances the savory aroma without bitterness. The cooled onion mixture is folded into a blend of cream cheese, mayonnaise, yogurt, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and white pepper, resulting in a smooth yet flavorful dip.

The creamy dairy ingredients provide tang and richness, complementing the soft, sweet onion texture. The dip requires chilling for at least two hours to allow the flavors to fully develop and blend. Cooking the onions gently prevents burning and preserves the sweet notes.

It is ideal as a chilled dip served alongside snacks like chips or crudités. The recipe suggests letting it rest overnight for optimal flavor. Fine chopping of onions ensures a smooth texture without large bits. Adding water during caramelization can prevent burning if needed, and garlic is added last to keep its flavor from turning bitter.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pound onion 450g), 3 large or 4-5 small, yellow
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1 cup cream cheese (8 ounces, 225 grams)
  • ½ cup mayonnaise (115 grams)
  • ½ cup yogurt 115 grams) or cream cheese or more sour cream, plain, Greek
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon ground white pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Peel the onions and slice finely.
  2. Heat the butter in a saute pan over a medium/low heat, then lower the heat to low and stir in the onions and sugar. Cook, stirring often, for 15 minutes or until golden brown and caramelized but not burned. TIP: If the onions begin to burn, add a tablespoon of water and continue cooking.
  3. Stir in the garlic and cook for a further minute. Remove from the heat and allow to cool.
  4. Add the cream cheese, mayonnaise, yogurt, worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, pepper and salt to a mixing bowl and stir well to combine. When the onions are cool, stir them in.
  5. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight, for the flavors to blend.

Notes

  • Chop onions very finely for a smooth dip texture.
  • If onions start to burn during cooking, add a tablespoon of water to continue caramelizing safely.
  • Add garlic at the last minute of cooking to prevent bitterness.
  • Allow the dip to rest for at least 12 hours or overnight for best flavor integration.
