French Onion Dip
Description
Making French Onion Dip involves slowly caramelizing yellow onions in olive oil over low heat until evenly browned and sweet, adding minced garlic near the end of cooking for aromatic complexity. Once cooled, the onions are mixed into sour cream along with fresh chives, lemon juice, salt, and pepper. This gives a creamy, tangy dip enhanced by the savory depth of the onions.
The dip’s texture is smooth with tender onion pieces throughout. The gradual caramelization process develops natural sweetness and umami, balancing the sour cream’s tang. It is best served fresh but can be chilled for up to a day to develop more flavor.
French Onion Dip works well as a snack or party dip served alongside potato chips or crisp veggies. Preparing the onions in advance allows for easier assembly close to serving time.
The caramelized onions can be made up to three days ahead and stored separately, then combined with sour cream shortly before serving to keep the dip fresh.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 yellow onion finely chopped
- 2 garlic minced, cloves
- 1 cup sour cream
- 2 tablespoons chive finely chopped, fresh
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice fresh
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- potato chips for serving
Instructions
- Heat the oil in a sauté pan on medium high heat. Add the onions to the pan.
- Stir periodically for 10 minutes, allowing them to color.
- Reduce heat to medium low and continue to cook, stirring frequently for about 10 minutes.
- Reduce heat to low and continue to cook until evenly caramelized, about 15 more minutes. If the onions start to stick to the pan, add a couple tablespoons of water to deglaze the pan. When there is one minute left, add the garlic and saute until fragrant.
- Transfer the caramelized onions to a medium bowl and allow to cool. Add the sour cream, chives, parsley, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Mix and serve immediately or chill for up to 24 hours before serving. Serve with your favorite potato chips or veggies.
Notes
- Caramelize onions slowly for about 35 minutes until deeply golden, adding water to deglaze if needed to prevent sticking.
- You can prepare caramelized onions up to 3 days before serving; store refrigerated and mix with sour cream just before serving.
- Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days.
