Description
The dip starts with slowly caramelizing diced yellow onions in olive oil and butter over medium-low heat with soy sauce and aromatic seasonings like garlic salt, onion powder, black pepper, and dried thyme. This process deepens the onions' natural sugars and adds complexity.
The cooled onions are folded into a mixture of softened cream cheese and sour cream to create a rich and creamy base. The mixture can be chilled before serving to blend flavors fully.
Besides the classic dip, the recipe offers a baked version that incorporates Parmesan and shredded mozzarella or Gruyere cheeses. The baked preparation browns the top, adding a melty, savory dimension suitable as a warm appetizer.
Ingredients
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
- 2 Tablespoons butter salted
- 2 yellow onion about 2.5 cups finely diced, large
- 2 teaspoons soy sauce low sodium
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon thyme dried
- 1 cup sour cream
- 4 oz. cream cheese cut into cubes
Instructions
- Take out the cream cheese and let it soften while you caramelized the onions.
- Add butter, olive oil, and onions to a 12-inch skillet over medium heat. Toss to combine and heat for 5 minutes, until softened.
- Add soy sauce, garlic salt, onion powder, pepper, and thyme. Reduce heat to low.
- Cover partially and cook for 20-25 minutes, until caramelized. Stir every few minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
- Combine the cream cheese with sour cream (and/or mayo). Add caramelized onions. If possible, refrigerate for at least 1 hour prior to serving.
Notes
- This recipe makes about 1 ¾ cups of dip.
- You can use a combination of mayonnaise and sour cream instead of sour cream alone.
- For a baked dip, add Parmesan and shredded Gruyere or mozzarella before baking at 375°F for 15 minutes, optionally broiling for up to 5 minutes for a browned top.
