French Onion Dip (Better Than Store Bought)
Description
French Onion Dip (Better Than Store Bought) blends slowly caramelized onions and minced garlic with a creamy mixture of sour cream and mayonnaise. The caramelization process, taking around 45 minutes, intensifies the onion's natural sweetness while softening their texture. Fresh chives and parsley add brightness and a subtle herbal note, while salt and pepper season the dip to taste. Once combined and chilled, the dip delivers a smooth, creamy texture punctuated by tender pieces of onion and a mild garlicky undertone. It works well as a snack accompaniment or party dip, offering a familiar yet homemade flavor improved over store-bought versions.
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter or oil
- 2 yellow onion sliced, medium
- 3 garlic minced, cloves
- 2 cups sour cream
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons chives fresh, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon parsley finely chopped, fresh
- salt to taste, Kosher salt and freshly ground
- black pepper to taste, Kosher salt and freshly ground
Instructions
- Heat the butter or oil in a large sauté pan on medium heat and add the onions. Stir the onions for 2 minutes, then reduce the heat to low.
- Continue stirring the onions every 2 to 3 minutes, allowing them to caramelize on the bottom before stirring again. If they start to stick or brown, add a few tablespoons of water to rehydrate them and deglaze the pan.
- Continue cooking the onions for approximately 45 minutes or until they're cooked to your liking. When there's one minute left on the onions, add the minced garlic and sauté for one minute. For more help with the onions, you can watch exactly how to make caramelized onions step-by-step on my separate recipe post.
- Once the onions have caramelized, transfer them to a small bowl and place them in the fridge to cool.
- After the onions have cooled, add them to a mixing bowl with the sour cream, mayonnaise, chives, parsley, salt and pepper. Stir everything together until creamy and garnish with additional herbs.
Notes
- This recipe yields about 3 cups of dip, suitable for a small gathering or party.
- Chilling the caramelized onions before mixing helps maintain the dip's creamy consistency.
- If onions begin sticking during caramelization, adding a few tablespoons of water will deglaze the pan and prevent burning.
