French Toast Recipe
Description
The French Toast Recipe uses a custard-like mixture made from eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt, into which sliced bread is briefly dipped. The bread options include French bread, sourdough, challah, white bread, or brioche, cut into roughly three-quarter-inch slices. These slices soak for a few seconds on each side to absorb enough custard without becoming soggy.
Cooking involves melting butter in a skillet over medium heat and frying the soaked bread until each side turns golden brown, typically 3 to 4 minutes per side. This process creates a contrast between a slightly crisp outer layer and a soft, custardy interior. To keep the French toast warm before serving, the cooked slices can be placed on a cookie sheet in an oven set to 250°F.
Common serving accompaniments include butter, maple syrup, fresh fruit, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar. These toppings complement the cinnamon and vanilla flavors and can be varied according to preference.
