French Toast Sticks
Description
This recipe for French Toast Sticks starts by cutting thick stale bread slices into narrow sticks after removing the crust to promote even soaking and cooking. The sticks soak thoroughly in an egg, milk, and vanilla mixture flavored with cinnamon and sugar. Cooking them in butter over low to medium heat creates a golden, slightly crisp exterior while the inside remains tender but fully cooked. After cooking, coating the sticks in the cinnamon-sugar mixture adds sweetness and texture contrast.
The finished French Toast Sticks have a balanced crispy and soft texture combination with a warm vanilla-cinnamon flavor profile. The low-medium heat cooking helps avoid burning while thoroughly cooking the egg mixture soak, producing a well-caramelized crust.
These sticks can be served with syrup for dipping as a convenient handheld breakfast option. Leftovers store well in the refrigerator for several days or frozen for longer storage.
Reheat single servings in the microwave or toaster oven, or reheat multiple sticks on a baking sheet in the oven at 375°F until warmed through.
