French Toast Waffles

French Toast Waffles combine the custardy richness of classic French toast with the crisp texture of waffles using challah bread soaked in an egg, milk, cinnamon, vanilla, and sugar mixture. Cooking thick slices of challah bread in a waffle iron produces golden waffles with a tender inside and lightly spiced sweetness, ideal for breakfast or brunch. Their ability to freeze well and reheat crisply makes them a convenient make-ahead option.

Description

French Toast Waffles are made by soaking thick slices of challah bread in a seasoned custard of eggs, milk, cinnamon, vanilla, and sugar, then cooking them in a waffle iron until golden and crisp. The challah bread's soft crumb absorbs the mixture well, creating waffles with a moist interior and a lightly spiced flavor. The cinnamon and vanilla add warmth and aroma without overpowering the delicate egg custard flavor.

The cooking technique transforms thick bread slices into textured waffles with crispy edges. Serving them with melted butter and maple syrup complements the slight sweetness and adds richness.

Because the waffles freeze well, they can be kept in an airtight bag once cooled and quickly reheated in a toaster for a crispy finish or in a microwave for softness. This makes them practical for preparing in advance. While challah is recommended for its texture and flavor, alternatives like cinnamon bread or French bread can be used. Using slightly stale bread is also a good way to prevent sogginess.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 loaf challah bread
  • 1 cup milk 8 ounces, 2%
  • 8 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon 8 grams
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 5 grams
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar 36 grams
  • butter for topping
  • maple syrup for topping

Instructions

  1. Slice bread into thick slices about an inch thick. 1 loaf Challah bread
  2. Whisk milk, eggs, cinnamon, vanilla and sugar together in a medium bowl or shallow dish. 1 cup 2% milk, 8 large eggs, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  3. Dunk each piece of bread into mixture and turn the bread to coat. Allow the egg mixture soak into the bread slightly.
  4. Lift bread slices out of the milk mixture and onto a hot waffle iron. Cook until golden brown. Remove and repeat with the remaining slices of bread.
  5. Place cooked waffles on a wire rack if desired to keep them from getting soggy. Serve with melted butter and maple syrup.

Notes

  • Challah bread is preferred, but cinnamon or French bread can also be used.
  • These waffles reheat well from frozen; use a toaster for crispness or microwave for softness.
  • Use slightly stale bread for better soaking without sogginess.
  • The recipe yields about 10 waffles; nutritional info is approximate based on ingredients.
