Fried Apples
Description
This recipe uses apple wedges cooked in melted butter combined with granulated and brown sugar plus cinnamon, which coats the fruit and caramelizes during cooking. The apples brown slightly around the edges while retaining enough firmness to hold their shape. The sugars and spices meld with the buttery base, creating a warm, lightly spiced flavor. The method involves gently stirring the apples over about 10 to 15 minutes until the desired softness and caramelization are achieved.
Fried Apples can be served immediately as a side dish, on pancakes, or as a topping for ice cream. Thicker wedges help maintain texture and make the apples easier to eat. Leftovers keep for up to three days refrigerated.
Choosing sweeter apple varieties is beneficial as tart apples may require additional sugar to balance the flavor. Peeling the apples is optional depending on texture preference.
Ingredients
- 6 large apple such as Pink Lady, Granny Smith or Braeburn
- 1/2 cup butter salted or unsalted, both work just fine
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Peel the apples if desired (I leave the skins on). Cut the apples into wedges.
- Melt the butter in a large pan over medium high heat.
- Add the granulated sugar, brown sugar and cinnamon to the pan. Stir to combine.
- Add the apples to the pan. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 10-15 minutes until apples have started to caramelize around the edges.
- Serve immediately. Leftovers can be stored in a container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Notes
- Cut apples into thicker wedges to prevent them from becoming overly soft while cooking.
- Sweeter apple varieties like Pink Lady are suited for this recipe; increase sugar by 1/4 cup if using tart apples such as Granny Smith.
- Leftover fried apples store in the refrigerator for up to three days.
