Fried Cabbage Recipe

This Fried Cabbage recipe combines crisp bacon, caramelized onions, and tender cabbage seasoned with chicken bouillon and a blend of spices, including Cajun seasoning for a smoky kick. Cooking the cabbage in bacon drippings adds depth to the flavor and a slight richness. This side dish balances savory, smoky, and mildly spiced notes, making it suitable for serving alongside meats or as part of a hearty meal.

Description

The Fried Cabbage Recipe uses chopped bacon cooked until crispy to provide a flavorful base and fat for sautéing. Onions are cooked slowly in the bacon grease until caramelized, enhancing their sweetness. Garlic is added for a brief time to release aroma without bitterness. Sliced green or red cabbage is then stirred in and cooked until tender but not mushy. Seasonings including chicken bouillon, onion and garlic powders, salt, pepper, and Cajun spices enrich the dish with savory and mildly spicy nuances. Finally, the reserved bacon is stirred back into the cabbage for additional texture and flavor.

The combination of smoky bacon and soft cabbage creates a comforting side that pairs well with grilled or roasted meats, or can be served with eggs or potatoes for a filling meal. The Cajun seasoning adds a subtle warmth without overpowering the natural cabbage taste.

Variations include adding smoked sausage, a touch of apple cider vinegar to brighten flavors, or a small amount of sugar or sweetener to balance any bitterness in cabbage. Adjust seasoning to taste and cook cabbage to desired tenderness.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 6 lices Bacon chopped
  • 1 onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced or chopped
  • 1 green cabbage or red cabbage, cored and sliced, head
  • 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon or seasoned salt
  • 1 pinch salt to taste
  • 1 pinch black pepper to taste
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Cajun seasoning I use Slap Ya Mama or smoky paprika

Instructions

  1. Cook bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crispy. Transfer bacon to a plate with a slotted spoon. Do not discard bacon drippings.
  2. Sauté the onion in the bacon grease until the onion caramelizes (about 8 minutes). Add the garlic and cook until fragrant (30 seconds).
  3. Stir in the cabbage and cook for a further 8 minutes while stirring occasionally. Season with the bouillon, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper and Cajun seasoning (or paprika).
  4. Mix bacon into the cabbage to warm through and serve.

Notes

  • Swapping smoked sausage for bacon offers a different smoky flavor profile.
  • Incorporating a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar can enhance brightness in the dish.
  • Adding one to two teaspoons of brown or white sugar balances the cabbage's natural bitterness; keto-friendly sweeteners like Swerve or Natvia can be used as substitutes.
