Fried Green Beans
Description
The green beans are first blanched in boiling water for about two minutes to soften slightly while preserving their green color. They are then shocked in an ice bath to halt the cooking process and dried thoroughly. The coating process involves dredging the beans in flour, dipping into beaten egg, and covering them evenly with seasoned bread crumbs.
Frying at medium-high temperature develops a browned and crispy crust without overcooking the green beans inside. After frying, draining on paper towels removes excess oil for a less greasy finish. These fried beans provide a textural contrast, combining crunchy coating and tender green beans inside.
They can be served warm alongside a variety of dipping sauces such as ranch, hummus, avocado lime ranch, chipotle ranch, or dill vegetable dip, enhancing the flavor experience. Alternative cooking methods include baking or air frying with adjusted times and temperatures for a less oily option.
Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator and reheated using an air fryer or oven broiler to maintain crispness for 1-2 days.
Ingredients
- 1 pound green beans fresh
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 egg
- 1 cup seasoned bread crumbs
- 2 cups vegetable oil
Instructions
- Blanch green beans by bringing a pot of water to a boil and cooking beans for about 2 minutes (or bright green). Immediately add beans to an ice bath (bowl of ice water). Drain beans and pat dry with paper towels.
- Heat oil on medium-high heat in a large saucepan or deep fryer.
- While oil is heating, add flour to a medium bowl, beaten egg to a separate bowl, and bread crumbs to another bowl.
- Dredge green beans in flour, transfer to egg mixture, and coat. Add to bread crumbs and make sure the entire bean is coated.
- Fry green beans in oil until golden brown (about 4 minutes). Once fried, add to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve warm with dips.
Notes
- To bake instead of fry, arrange breaded green beans on a greased baking sheet and bake at 425°F for 12-15 minutes until golden.
- To air fry, spray breaded green beans with olive oil and cook at 390°F for about 5 minutes until golden brown.
- Store leftover fried green beans in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1-2 days.
- Reheat leftovers using an air fryer or broiling in the oven to maintain crispness.
- Serve with dips such as ranch, homemade hummus, avocado lime ranch, chipotle ranch, or dill vegetable dip for added flavor.
