Fried Green Tomato BLT

The fried green tomato BLT with a tangy remoulade mayo is the ultimate summer sammie and a creative Southern take on a lunchtime classic.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices bread toasted
  • 8 slices Bacon cooked and crispy.
  • crisp lettuce

fried green tomatoes

  • 8 slices green tomatoes
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all purpose four
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne
  • vegetable oil for frying

remoulade mayo spread

  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 Tbsp brown mustard
  • 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp capers, finely chopped
  • 1 Tbsp cornichons or dill pickles, finely chopped
  • 1 Tbsp prepared horseradish
  • 1 tsp tabasco
  • 1 tsp paprika (smoked or regular)
  • 1/2 tsp sugar, or more to taste
  • Salt, if needed, and black pepper to taste

Instructions

make the remoulade mayonnaise

  1. Blend together all the ingredients and taste to adjust to your liking. Chill until ready to use. Can be made a day or two ahead of time.

fry the tomatoes

  1. Put the buttermilk in a shallow bowl. Whisk the dry ingredients together in another shallow bowl.
  2. Heat 1/4 inch vegetable oil in a medium skillet until shimmering.
  3. Dip the tomato slices into the buttermilk, and then into the cornmeal/flour mixture to coat thoroughly.
  4. Fry until golden on each side, about 2 minutes total. Drain on paper towels. Change or strain oil as needed.

assemble the sandwiches

  1. Spread a generous layer of remoulade on both pieces of toasted bread.
  2. Add lettuce to the bottom slice. Then add fried tomatoes, 1 or 2 slices as fits your bread.
  3. Top with bacon and the other slice of bread. Slice in half and dig in!
