Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe (Baked)

This recipe offers a baked version of fried green tomatoes using firm, partially green tomatoes coated in seasoned buttermilk, flour, and panko breadcrumbs. The slices are baked at high heat on an oiled sheet until turning golden and crispy, providing a healthier alternative to deep frying. A side of Caesar dressing is suggested for dipping, adding a creamy and tangy contrast to the crisp tomato rounds.

Description

Fried Green Tomatoes Recipe (Baked) uses sliced firm green tomatoes coated in flour, seasoned buttermilk, and panko breadcrumbs, baked in a 400°F oven on an oiled baking sheet. The coating mixture includes Cajun seasoning, salt, and cumin for a mildly spiced flavor. Baking instead of frying gives the tomatoes a crispy breadcrumb exterior with a tender, tangy tomato interior. The oil on the baking sheet helps achieve an even crispness.

This method yields golden brown tomato slices with a crunchy crust and bright acidity from the green tomatoes. The use of buttermilk enhances the topping adhesion and contributes a subtle tang. The suggested Caesar dressing dip adds a creamy, savory element that complements the spices and the fresh tomato taste.

The tomatoes are sliced thin enough to become tender while baking and maintain shape without becoming mushy. This side dish or appetizer can be enjoyed warm for the best texture, making it a flavorful way to highlight unripe tomatoes.

Choose firm, partially green tomatoes with extra firmness for best tang and crispness.Gluten-free flour and breadcrumbs can substitute all-purpose and panko breadcrumbs.Bake at 400°F, flipping halfway, to achieve a golden crust without frying.
