Fried Mozzarella Sticks
Description
This recipe prepares mozzarella sticks by cutting mozzarella into strips (or halving string cheese), then coating them in a dry flour and cornstarch blend to help the batter stick. The sticks are dipped twice in egg wash and bread crumbs mixed with garlic salt, ensuring a crunchy and seasoned crust. Chilling the coated sticks before frying helps the breading adhere and prevents cheese leakage.
Frying at a high temperature (around 375°F) quickly crisps the exterior to a golden brown while melting the inside cheese to a creamy texture. The combination of the crispy coating and soft mozzarella inside creates a satisfying snack or appetizer that works well alongside pizza sauce or ranch dressing for dipping.
These mozzarella sticks should be served immediately while the cheese is melted and gooey. Leftovers can be reheated carefully to avoid toughening the exterior or overcooking the cheese. This recipe also includes notes on how to adapt to cooking them in an air fryer for convenience and less oil use.
Ingredients
- 1 pound mozzarella cheese cut into strips (or string cheese cut in half)
- 3 egg well beaten (with about 2 Tbsp water
- 1 cup flour
- ¼ cup cornstarch
- 1 cup Italian bread crumbs
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
Instructions
- Mix flour and cornstarch in a medium-sized bowl. Mix bread crumbs and garlic salt in a separate bowl.
- Dip each stick in egg, then roll in flour. Dip in egg again then roll in bread crumbs.
- Place on wax paper and chill for about an hour.
- In a large pan or skillet, heat oil to about 375 degrees (you can also use a deep fryer). Fry chilled cheese sticks in oil until they turn a nice golden brown color.
- Drain on paper towels. Serve with pizza sauce or ranch dressing.
Notes
- For best results, chill coated mozzarella sticks for about an hour before frying to prevent cheese from leaking.
- You can use string cheese cut in half as a convenient alternative to cutting fresh mozzarella.
- Serve the fried sticks immediately with pizza sauce or ranch dressing for dipping.
- To make these in an air fryer, follow air fryer-specific directions for crisp texture with less oil.
