Fried Onion Burger
Description
The Fried Onion Burger recipe combines the sweetness of thinly sliced onions with beef patties cooked directly on top, allowing the meat juices to mingle with the caramelizing onions underneath. This cooking technique creates crispy and deeply flavored edges on the patty and soft, savory onions mixed together. Toasting the buttered buns on the same griddle adds a gentle crunch and rich flavor to the sandwich. The patties are seasoned with garlic salt and black pepper for simplicity, highlighting the beef and onion flavor without overwhelming it. American cheese slices melt over the patties to add creaminess.
This burger is best served fresh from the griddle while the onions are tender and the beef juicy, on a lightly toasted bun. It works well as a hearty lunch or casual dinner option. Using 80/20 ground beef balances fat for flavor and juiciness without too much grease.
When forming the beef balls before smashing, they should be loosely shaped, not packed tightly, to allow for better texture and easier smashing into thin patties. Variations in fat percentage like using 90/10 or 93/7 lean ground beef are possible but may yield less flavorful results compared to 80/20.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef 80/20, pound
- 1 yellow onion Thinly sliced, large
- 1/2 tsp garlic salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 4 lices American cheese
- 4 Hamburger Bun
- 1 Tbsp butter Melted
Instructions
- Divide the beef into 4 balls that are approximately 4 oz each. Place them in the refrigerator until you are ready to cook them.
- Preheat a griddle or cast iron skillet over medium high heat (approximately 400 degrees F).
- Butter the buns and place them on the griddle (or skillet) for 2 minutes to toast them and then set them aside while you prepare the beef.
- Evenly place the sliced onions into 4 piles on the griddle (or skillet). Place the beef on top of each onion pile. Then top each one with a piece on parchment paper and then firmly press down to smash the beef into a thin patty with either a burger press or a large spatula and then discard the parchment paper. Season with the patties with garlic salt and the pepper.
- Cook the patties for 2-4 minutes until the juices in the beef start to raise to the top and the color starts to change. Then scrape under the patty to get under all the onions and flip the patty. Once flipped, smash down each patty again with the burger press or spatula so that the juices from the patties will drip down into the onions to give them the best flavor. Cook for 1 more minute. Then place a piece of cheese on each of the patties to melt.
- Then it's time to assemble your burgers. Carefully remove the patties from the griddle once the cheese is melted and place them on the buttered buns.
- Then the fried onions burgers are ready to enjoy!
Notes
- Form beef balls loosely, do not pack them tightly to facilitate smashing thin patties.
- You may use leaner ground beef such as 90/10 or 93/7 to reduce fat, but 80/20 gives richer flavor for this recipe.
