Fried Sage and Manchego Cheese Rolls
Description
This recipe involves heating a shallow layer of olive oil to the proper frying temperature, then placing sage leaves underside up and wrapping a small cube of manchego cheese in each leaf. Securing each with a toothpick helps keep the cheese enclosed during frying. The rolls are fried for about one to one and a half minutes until the sage crisps up but does not burn. They are drained on paper towels to remove excess oil.
The finished rolls deliver a contrast between the warm, slightly melted manchego cheese and the aromatic crispy sage. These make a compact, flavorful finger food suitable as an appetizer or part of a tapas-style spread.
The recipe can be easily scaled up by doubling or tripling the quantities to serve a larger group or multiple servings.
Ingredients
- 16 sage large leaves
- 16 manchego cheese small cubes
Instructions
- Heat about 1/4 - 1/2 inch of olive oil in a saute pan. It should be hot enough that the sage sizzles on contact with the oil.
- Lay down sage leaves, under side up. Put a small chunk of cheese at the tip, and wrap up, securing with a toothpick.
- Fry until crisp, about one to one and a half minutes. Drain on paper towels and serve.
Notes
- Increase the recipe quantity by doubling or tripling the ingredients to serve more people.
