Fried Wonton Recipe

These fried wontons are filled with a savory mixture of ground pork, minced shiitake mushrooms, and aromatics, wrapped in square wonton wrappers shaped into purses. Description

The recipe combines ground pork with finely minced shiitake mushrooms, green onions, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, and seasonings to make a well-flavored filling. Wonton wrappers are filled with a small portion of the mixture, then folded into triangular purse shapes sealed with water to prevent leaking during frying.

Deep-frying in hot oil renders the wontons golden brown and crispy in about 3 to 5 minutes. The contrast between the crunchy wrapper and juicy filling is a defining characteristic. Serving them with sweet chili sauce adds a touch of heat and sweetness that complements the savory filling.

  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 1/2 cup shiitake mushrooms finely minced
  • 1/4 cup green onions thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil toasted
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger minced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic minced
  • 12 ounce package wonton wrapper square
  • vegetable oil for frying
  • sweet chili sauce optional, for serving

Instructions

  1. Place the pork, mushrooms, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, salt, pepper, ginger and garlic in a large bowl. Stir until thoroughly combined.
  2. Place one wonton wrapper on a flat surface. Keep the remaining wrappers covered so that they don't dry out. Brush the two edges of the wonton wrapper farthest away from you with water.
  3. Place 3/4 teaspoon of the pork mixture onto the center of the wrapper. Fold the wrapper over into a triangle shape, then bring the two bottom corners together to make a purse shape. Use a bit of water to "glue" the bottom corners together.
  4. Repeat the process with the remaining wrappers and filling.
  5. Heat 3 inches of oil in a large deep pot to 375 degrees F.
  6. Fry 6-8 of the wontons at a time for 3-5 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and repeat the process with the remaining wontons.
  7. Serve immediately, with a side of sweet chili sauce if desired.
