Garlic Bread
Description
Garlic Bread combines the aromatic flavors of garlic powder and fresh parsley mixed into a softened butter and olive oil spread. Spreading this on a halved French bread loaf and baking it at a moderate temperature yields a bread with crisp, golden edges and a tender interior. The use of garlic powder avoids the risk of burning raw garlic while providing consistent garlic taste. This recipe’s simple method delivers bread that's flavorful and aromatic, offering a satisfying accompaniment to various dishes or as a standalone appetizer.
The French bread’s crustiness contrasts with the buttery spread to create a balanced mouthfeel, while the parsley adds a fresh note. The bread can be served warm and sliced to make a dozen pieces, enough for sharing with a small group.
This garlic bread can be prepped ahead by making the garlicky butter mixture days in advance or frozen unbaked after spreading, then baked directly from frozen for convenience. Leftovers can be refrigerated for several days and reheated as needed.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf French bread cut in half lengthwise (see note 1)
- 1/2 cup butter softened (1 stick, see note 2)
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder (see note 3)
- 1 tablespoon parsley minced, fresh
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line a rimmed baking sheet with foil for easy clean up. In a small bowl, whisk together butter, olive oil, garlic powder, and parsley until well combined.
- Cut loaf of bread lengthwise. Spread half of the butter mixture on each half of bread. Place on prepared baking sheet and bake until edges turn golden brown, about 20 minutes.
Notes
- French bread is preferred for its light crumb and crusty shell, but Italian bread can be a substitute.
- To soften butter quickly, microwave in short bursts on low power, checking softness frequently.
- Garlic powder provides consistent flavor without risk of burning that fresh garlic might bring during baking.
- Make the garlic butter spread up to three days in advance, storing it covered in the refrigerator.
- For freezing, apply butter spread on bread, freeze solid, then wrap tightly before storing up to three months; bake from frozen directly.
- Optional: sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top before baking for added flavor.
