Garlic Bread Star Bread

Garlic Bread Star Bread is a visually striking yeast bread shaped in layered circular discs filled with a garlic butter mixture and Parmesan cheese. The soft, enriched dough rises before being rolled out and layered with a mixture of butter, minced garlic, Parmesan, and dried herbs. The dough is cut and twisted into a star shape, then brushed with egg wash and sprinkled with more Parmesan and herbs before baking.

Description

This recipe begins with a soft yeast dough made from warm milk, instant dry yeast, sugar, salt, softened butter, egg, and all-purpose flour. The dough is mixed and kneaded until it becomes supple and tacky, then allowed to rise until doubled in size. After rising, it is divided into four equal balls, each rolled into circles about the size of a baking sheet.

Between each dough circle, a garlic butter filling comprised of softened salted butter mixed with grated Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, dried basil, and oregano is spread evenly. The stacked dough layers are then sliced and twisted to form a star bread shape, which creates visually appealing layers revealing the garlic filling after baking. An egg wash of egg white and water is brushed on top, sprinkled with Parmesan and dried basil, contributing to a golden crust and extra flavor.

Once baked, the bread presents a soft, buttery texture with pronounced garlic and Parmesan notes, ideal as a flavorful side or snack. The dough's enriched nature ensures a tender crumb, while the shaping technique adds an attractive presentation.

Variations of fillings and toppings can be explored to customize flavors. The website offers additional ideas for this bread. Proper dough consistency and adequate rising time are key to achieving a light but tender texture.

Ingredients

Servings

Dough Recipe

  • 1 cup milk warm
  • 1 tablespoon instant dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons butter softened, salted
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour

Garlic Bread Filling

  • 1/3 cup butter softened, salted
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese grated
  • 2 tablespoon garlic about 4 cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon basil dried
  • 1/2 teaspoon oregano dried

Topping

  • 1 large egg white
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan Cheese grated
  • 1 teaspoon basil dried

Instructions

Dough Recipe

  1. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine warm milk, yeast, sugar, salt, butter, and eggs. Add in flour. Use a dough hook and turn on to a low speed.
  2. Once the flour starts to incorporate into the dough, increase the speed to a medium range. Add more flour as necessary so that the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. The dough mixture should be soft and tacky, but not stick to your hands.
  3. Add more or less flour until the dough reaches the desired consistency. The amount of flour you add in bread making is always an approximation and you should go by feel.
  4. Transfer the dough to a lightly greased mixing bowl. Cover with a towel and let rise until double in size, about 1 hour.

Shaping and Baking Instructions

  1. Take dough and divide it into 4 even pieces. Roll each piece into a large circle, roughly the width of your baking sheet.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
  2. Lay one circle down onto a parchment lined baking sheet. Spread 1/3 of the garlic bread mixture on top in an even layer, leaving 1/4 inch around the edge of the circle
  3. Continue layering with the remaining pieces, but leave the 4th and final piece plain on top. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
  4. Use a small 2-inch bowl to mark the center (or eyeball it) and then use a knife to cut 16 equal strands, leaving the small circle in the center.⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
  5. Take two of the strands and twist in opposite directions, 2-3 times, and then pinch the edges shut to seal. Continue twisting pieces together until all pieces are twisted and you have a large star shape. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
  6. In a small bowl, whisk the egg white and water together until they are well combined. Use a pastry brush to brush the egg wash over the surface of the loaf. Sprinkle with additional parmesan cheese and dried basil.
  7. Bake immediately (no rising) in a 350 degree F oven for 20-25 minutes. ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣Once cooled, serve plain, or dip in marinara(optional)

Notes

  • Soft dough texture depends on careful flour amounts and kneading until dough is tacky but not sticky.
  • Use softened salted butter for the filling to blend easily with garlic and Parmesan.
  • Shaping into the star form reveals the garlic butter filling layers after baking for attractive presentation.
  • Egg white wash and Parmesan topping enhance color and flavor of the crust.
  • Refer to the source website for more flavor variations for the filling and toppings.
