Garlic Breadsticks
Description
Yeast is activated with sugar in warm water, then combined with flour and salt to form a soft dough. After light kneading, the dough rests briefly before being portioned into 18 pieces rolled into elongated shapes. These are placed close together in a buttered pan to allow expansion during proofing, which results in connected but separable breadsticks.
After a second rise, the dough is sprinkled with Parmesan cheese and garlic salt, then baked at 375°F until golden brown. The butter in the pan adds richness to the crust and bottom of the breadsticks. Baking them closely together ensures they have a soft interior pull-apart texture while retaining a flavorful crust.
These breadsticks work well as an accompaniment to pasta dishes, soups, or salads. The combination of butter and Parmesan imparts savory depth, while garlic salt enhances the aromatic quality. Making a double batch is recommended as they tend to be consumed quickly.
Using high-quality butter can improve the richness of flavor, and avoiding excess space between dough snakes supports proper rising and connection. Doubling Parmesan cheese intensifies cheesiness without over-salting.
Ingredients
- 1 TBS yeast
- 2 TBS sugar
- 1 ½ cup water warm
- 3 cups flour
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ cup butter
- ½ cup Parmesan Cheese grated
- garlic salt to taste
Instructions
- Dissolve yeast and sugar in warm water, about five minutes.
- Add flour and salt then knead lightly for 2 minutes with a mixer or by hand.
- Let dough rest for 10 minutes.
- Melt butter in a 9x13 pan.
- Divide dough into 18 parts. Roll into snakes and put close together in pan with melted butter.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Let dough rise in pan for 20 minutes.
- Sprinkle with grated parmesan cheese and garlic salt until they're all covered.
- Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes.
- Serve warm directly from the pan or on a serving tray, all breadsticks together.
Notes
- Pack breadstick dough snakes tightly together in the pan with minimal gaps to encourage rising that fills the pan and creates pull-apart sticks.
- Use high-quality butter for better flavor since these breadsticks bake in butter.
- Increasing Parmesan cheese adds cheesiness; however, avoid doubling garlic salt to prevent oversalting.
- Make double batches to accommodate quick consumption as these breadsticks are popular.
