Garlic Butter Rice

Garlic Butter Rice combines long grain white rice cooked in chicken broth with a rich garlic butter infusion. The recipe uses both sliced and minced garlic to create a balance of texture and flavor: crispy golden garlic slices garnish the fluffy rice, while the minced garlic is cooked into the butter for depth. The rice is cooked gently to absorb all liquid, then rested to complete steaming, resulting in tender grains. Sliced green onions add freshness and color when stirred in at the end, making this a flavorful side dish with a buttery garlic aroma.

Description

Garlic Butter Rice is made by sautéing sliced garlic in vegetable oil until crisp, then preparing a garlic-infused butter mixture with minced garlic. The rice is toasted briefly in this mixture before adding chicken broth and simmering with a covered lid until fully absorbed. Resting the rice after cooking allows the grains to finish steaming and prevents clumping. The final dish combines crispy garlic slices sprinkled on top with green onions stirred through and additional butter for richness. This method lends a textured garlic flavor, contrasting the tender, buttery rice.

The use of both garlic slices and minced garlic creates layers of flavor: the slices provide crunchy topping with a toasted aroma, while the minced garlic melts into the butter, distributing savory notes throughout the rice. The recipe relies on simple seasonings, with salt and white pepper added to taste. This side pairs well with grilled proteins or can be served alongside vegetable dishes.

The rice should be fluffed carefully to preserve its airy texture and avoid mashing. The use of chicken broth instead of water adds subtle savory depth. If preferred, vegetable broth can be substituted for a different flavor base. Resting the rice for 10 minutes after cooking is recommended to ensure even moisture distribution and fluffiness.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 6-8 cloves garlic very finely sliced
  • 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil or canola, grapeseed or other neutral flavored oil
  • 2 ½ teaspoons garlic minced
  • 4 tablespoons butter salted or unsalted, divided
  • 1 ½ cups long grain white rice
  • 2 ½ cups chicken broth
  • ¼-½ cup green onion sliced
  • salt to taste
  • white pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic slices and saute, moving constantly, until golden and crisp. Transfer to paper towels to drain.
  2. Pour out excess oil then return to the stove.
  3. Add 2 tablespoons butter. Once melted, add garlic. Cook for 1 ½ minutes or until the garlic starts to turn light golden and the butter is well infused with garlic flavour.
  4. Add rice, stir to coat in garlic butter.
  5. Add broth, place lid on saucepan. Bring to a boil then immediately turn down to medium low.
  6. Cook for 12 – 15 minutes or until liquid is all absorbed by the rice. Tilt saucepan to check.
  7. Remove from stove but leave lid on. Rest for 10 minutes.
  8. Fluff with fork, transfer into serving bowl. Stir through remaining butter and scallions, or garnish as per photos. Sprinkle with crispy garlic, salt, and pepper. Serve.
