Garlic Green Beans Recipe
Description
The Garlic Green Beans Recipe begins by heating olive oil in a skillet and sautéing trimmed green beans seasoned with salt and pepper. The beans are stirred frequently over medium-high heat to gently soften them without burning. After about five minutes, minced garlic is added and cooked briefly until fragrant, infusing the beans with a robust garlic flavor. Then, water is added and the pan is covered to steam the beans for a few minutes, retaining their bright green color and crisp-tender bite.
Once cooked, the green beans are drained and transferred to a serving bowl where remaining olive oil is drizzled on top. Adjustments with extra salt and pepper finalize the seasoning. The dish’s texture combines the slight firmness of steamed beans with the garlic-infused finish from sautéing. It can be served as a simple side dish complementing a variety of meals.
For storage, leftover green beans keep up to five days refrigerated in an airtight container. Fresh beans can be blanched, shocked in ice water, dried, and frozen for up to a year. To prepare frozen beans, sauté just before serving. These details offer ways to maintain fresh flavor and texture when cooking ahead or using frozen produce.
Ingredients
- 1 lb Green bean washed and trimmed, fresh
- 2 Tablespoon olive oil divided
- 2 garlic minced, cloves
- ½ teaspoon salt each, freshly ground
- ½ teaspoon black pepper each, freshly ground
- ½ cup water
Instructions
- Heat 1 Tbsp olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add trimmed green beans to the skillet, season them with salt and black pepper, and saute them stirring often until they are tender for about 5 minutes. (Make sure you don't burn them, reduce the heat if necessary).
- Add minced garlic to the green beans, toss and cook until fragrant for about 30 seconds.
- Pour 1/2 cup water over the green beans and cover the skillet with a lid. Steam the green beans for a couple of minutes, until they are bright green and crisp-tender.
- Drain green beans and transfer them to a serving bowl. Drizzle the remaining olive oil over them and season with a little bit of salt and pepper.
Notes
- Store leftover cooked green beans in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days.
- Fresh green beans can be blanched, cooled in ice water, dried, and frozen for up to 12 months for future use.
- To use frozen green beans, thaw and sauté them shortly before serving to retain texture.
