Gimlet
Description
The traditional Gimlet uses 2½ ounces of gin combined with equal parts freshly squeezed lime juice and simple syrup, shaken with ice to chill and dilute slightly. The shaking also blends the ingredients thoroughly, creating a smooth and balanced beverage. The mixture is strained into a pre-chilled cocktail glass such as a coupe or martini glass, often garnished with a lime wheel for aroma and presentation.
Flavor-wise, the Gimlet highlights the pine and herbal botanical qualities of the gin, complemented by the acidity and freshness from lime juice and mellow sweetness from simple syrup. The result is a clean, tart, and slightly sweet drink with a crisp finish. Variations include substituting vodka for gin or serving on the rocks.
For serving larger groups, ingredients can be scaled and pre-mixed, allowing guests to pour over ice and garnish as desired. Using freshly made simple syrup and fresh lime juice significantly improves the cocktail's brightness. Glassware can be chilled in the freezer or by coating with water and freezing briefly for optimal temperature.
Additional cocktail variations may include herbs like mint or alternative citrus liqueurs for flavor complexity, but the classic Gimlet remains a straightforward, well-balanced drink centered on gin and lime.
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 ounces gin (4 tablespoons, see note 1)
- 1/2 ounce lime juice (1 tablespoon)
- 1/2 ounce simple syrup (1 tablespoon, see note 2)
- ice as needed
- 1 lime for garnish, optional, wheel
Instructions
- Chill glassware if desired: Coat the outside of a glass with water and freeze until serving time. Or, freeze dry glassware for 2 to 3 hours before serving.
- Combine gin, lime juice, and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker. Fill shaker with ice, cover, and shake until outside of shaker is very cold, about 20 seconds.
- Strain cocktail into glass and garnish with a lime wheel.
Notes
- Chill glassware beforehand to keep the cocktail cold longer.
- Prepare simple syrup by gently dissolving equal parts sugar and water; let cool completely before using.
- Yield: This recipe makes one cocktail; multiply ingredients for larger batches accordingly.
- For a larger batch, mix gin, lime juice, and simple syrup in a pitcher, then serve over ice with lime wheels.
- Substitute vodka for gin to make a vodka gimlet; or white rum and grapefruit juice for a daiquiri variation.
- To serve on the rocks, use a rocks glass or stemless wine tumbler.
- Adding fresh mint leaves to the shaker creates a Southside variation.
- Rose's lime juice can replace fresh lime juice but alters sweetness and flavor balance.
