Ginger Mint Julep

The Ginger Mint Julep is a refreshing cocktail featuring a ginger sugar syrup combined with fresh mint leaves and bourbon, served over crushed ice. The syrup is made by simmering fresh ginger with sugar and water, which is then cooled and strained. This mixture is muddled with mint in the glass, then topped with bourbon and ice. It delivers a lightly sweetened, spicy, and minty drink ideal for cool refreshment.

Description

The Ginger Mint Julep begins with a homemade ginger sugar syrup made by simmering peeled ginger root in a simple sugar-water solution until the sugar dissolves and ginger flavors infuse the syrup. After cooling and straining, the syrup is combined in a glass with fresh mint sprigs and muddled to release aromatic oils and flavors.

Crushed ice is added to dilute and chill the drink, followed by bourbon for an earthy warmth tempered by the sweetness and spice of the syrup and the freshness of the mint. The preparation is straightforward, with each step building layers of flavor from spicy warmth to bright herbal notes.

This cocktail serves well as a cooling beverage with a complex, natural sweetness instead of artificial flavorings. The crushed ice is essential to maintaining the proper dilution and temperature as it is enjoyed.
