Gingerbread Loaf
Description
This Gingerbread Loaf recipe blends all-purpose flour, baking soda, ground ginger, nutmeg, and salt to create the spiced dry base. Light brown sugar and softened salted butter are creamed together, then enriched with molasses and vanilla extract for the characteristic rich sweetness and depth. Eggs are added to bind the batter.
Buttermilk is alternately mixed with the dry ingredients into the wet batter, contributing moisture and tender texture. The batter is poured into a greased and parchment-lined loaf pan to ensure easy removal and baked at 350ºF for 45-50 minutes, with a foil tent if browning too quickly. A dusting of powdered sugar is optional once cooled.
The resulting loaf carries aromatic ginger and nutmeg, complemented by the robust flavor of molasses. Its soft, moist crumb makes it suitable for serving sliced at breakfast with butter or alongside tea or coffee during colder months.
Using a kitchen scale to measure flour accurately prevents dryness and improves texture. Freshly grated nutmeg enhances flavor more than pre-ground. The loaf can be sliced into 10 pieces as a guideline for serving portions.
