Gingerbread Syrup
Description
This Gingerbread Syrup recipe mixes water, brown sugar, molasses, and spices including ground ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Simmering these ingredients together dissolves the sugar and thickens the syrup, which reaches a consistency similar to maple syrup once cooled.
The flavor is warm and aromatic, with the molasses lending depth and a dark sweetness characteristic of gingerbread. The spices work together to evoke traditional holiday baking flavors without solid ingredients involved.
The syrup can be stored in a sealed glass container in the refrigerator for weeks, making it a versatile condiment. It is suitable for drizzling over coffee, pancakes, waffles, or ice cream.
Variations include adding orange peel or whole spices during simmering to infuse additional aroma, or incorporating vanilla extract after cooling. Using whole spices requires longer simmering and straining afterward.
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 3 tablespoon molasses
- 2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Combine all of the ingredients in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium high heat.
- Reduce the heat to low and allow to simmer for 5 minutes. Sugar should be completely dissolved and the syrup will thicken.
- Allow the syrup to come to room temperature. Pour into a glass jar with a lid, and store in the fridge.
Notes
- Consider adding whole spices like cloves or allspice and a strip of orange peel during simmering, then strain after cooling for enhanced flavor.
- Avoid boiling over by stirring down bubbles and using a sufficiently large saucepan during heating.
- Adjust syrup thickness by reducing water quantity for a richer consistency.
- Store the syrup in an airtight glass container in the refrigerator; it will keep well for several weeks.
- This recipe yields about one cup of syrup; using an 8-ounce glass jar is suitable for storage.
